Bad Habits and the Power of One

BK told me that he has stopped drinking booze. He limits his alcohol to a glass of wine or beer with his meals. He says he's noticed a big difference: he is more productive after dinner, gets to bed earlier, sleeps longer and wakes up earlier. His mood has also improved, he says. He is not suffering the bouts of depression he was prone to before.

I like an evening cocktail too. I come from a family of people who drink at night. But like BK, I've found that anything other than a glass of wine at dinner tends to put me in an unproductive mood - the kind of mood that needs sedation, such as watching television. I won't give up drinking or smoking cigars entirely but I do have to reduce my intake.

I've been writing about "the power of one" a good deal lately. How, for example, every business needs one superstar marketer, one superstar idea leader, one superstar business manager, etc. In writing "the power of one" is important too. Great essays should have one main idea, one primary emotion and one purpose.

The power of one may be applicable to bad habits as well. Take drinking, for example. It's a well known fact that a single glass of red wine once a day is good for the health. Maybe the same thing is true of cigar smoking. There have been no definitive studies on this, but I'm willing to believe (okay - eager to believe) that smoking a Robusta a day would be good too.

How far could we take this?

Chocolate, in limited quantities, is good for you. Everything in moderation, the Greeks said. A single serving is certainly moderate. Hmm. Something to think about.

Michael - I love to read everything you write, but think you are reaching when thinking that smoking of any amount is good for you. Perhaps you weren't drinking in moderation when you wrote that?

I hope that you choose to start adding to your blog more frequently, as I will subscribe and follow it - just like I do with ETR.

My Best to You,

I don't have to worry about the smoking and drinking......never smoked, quit drinking the day I heard my dad died in 1975. But the chocolate and eating is something I have to work on. Enjoy your publication ETR and your blog.......keep it up.

Michael,

First off I love ETR. Now on to comments.

"Maybe the same thing is true of cigar smoking. There have been no definitive studies on this, but I'm willing to believe (okay - eager to believe) that smoking a Robusta a day would be good too."

According to Henry C Lu in his book Chinese Natural Cures... Tobacco is good for indegestion, abdominal swelling, headache, numbness and arthritic pain. It also is "Warm; pungent; toxic; promotes energy circulation; relieves pain; counteracts cold and damp conditions"

So your daily Robusta may actually promote your energy circulation and help you be more productive. Talk about a good excuse to have a good cigar!

"Chocolate, in limited quantities, is good for you."
True but, and this is a big but... and speaking of big butts if you eat too much of the sugar laden fat laden chocolate that is exactly what you will get :)

Back to the point, the chocolate has to be the right kind. Milk chocolate will not help your health. Only Dark Chocolate. And it should have high levels of Cacao.

Traditionally, chocolate was only drunk. The Europeans were the ones that started making chocolate candies.

Most of the fat in chocolate candy comes from the "white chocolate" which is fat that surrounds the cocoa bean. So with that in mind there is a great dietary supplement made of Dark Chocolate, it's sugar free (uses stevioside) called Chocodant.

Much healthier than a candy bar.

Thanks for ETR and all you do.
