I believe Teddy Roosevelt said it best. "Speak softly and carry a big stick". There will always be bullies and it is your responsibility to always be prepared. We all need to learn both how to speak softly and how to use the big stick when needed.

Sometimes, the best way to disarm and defuse a bully is to smile and quietly laugh at them, then do as you originally intended. Keep a steady, but nonconfrontational gaze and make it clear that they must be kidding!

Could not agree more. How one deals with bullies is a challenge because some understand social norms and are getting away with bad behavior because no one will call them on it. The problem is with those who don't understand these norms (?sociopaths) who will escalate things to violence.
My approach, "anonymous" bullies should be given wide berth, let them pass by and get on with your life. Repeat offenders who you deal with again and again are the ones that are more of a challenge as far as what to do.
Mr. Masterson, you posed the key questions at the end with hopes of a dialogue, I think. So how do you handle this common problem?
Thanks,
